Rugby’s radical new laws spark huge debate amid divisive red card and a change nobody seems to want

Rugby has entered a new era amid the introduction of a series of worldwide law trials for the coming 12 months.

So, how are they going down?

Well, it’s early days yet and the jury remains out, with some pretty mixed reactions.

You can read an explanation of each new law trial here.

It’s the one law which, at present, is only being implemented in the Rugby Championship which caused the most reaction over the weekend.

That’s the 20-minute red card rule, where a sent off player can be replaced by a team-mate after 20 minutes to lessen the impact on the game as a contest and a spectacle.

Welsh fans will be familiar with this from its implementation in the Rainbow Cup at the end of last season.

It won’t be in use over here in the coming campaign, but it is being employed Down Under and it has certainly emerged as a big talking point.

That follows the controversial sending-off of New Zealand full-back Jordie Barrett during the first half of Sunday’s clash with Australia in Perth.

Barrett – the younger brother of Beauden – was red carded for striking Australia winger Marika Koroibete in the face with his boot when jumping to catch a box-kick.

It was a decision which really divided opinion.

Ireland and Lions great Brian O’Driscoll defended the All Blacks player, saying: “It is a totally natural action for the catching player to balance themselves out with an extended leg.”

He added: “This rule really needs to be looked at. Once or twice a player has used that rebalancing act as a means to use foul play. In 99% of occasions that is not the case.”

Kiwi journalist Liam Napier also spoke out on behalf of try scorer Barrett, commenting: “Whatever your view of that card, there is no way it was intentional. There should, therefore, be mitigating circumstances.”

Aussie sports presenter Michael Atkinson labelled it an “outrageous” decision.

He added: “There is absolutely no way Barrett deserves a red card for that or any card in my opinion. If that is ‘the letter of the law’, the law is broken and I feel for the refs who have to apply it.”

All Blacks winger Julian Savea described it as the “most ridiculous call I’ve ever seen”, while ex-Welsh fly-half Lee Jarvis said it was “simply a balance issue”.

Yet others supported the decision from Aussie referee Damon Murphy, pointing out that intent is irrelevant under the laws.

Former Wallabies wing Drew Mitchell said: “There was direct contact with the foot to the head. Going by the letter of the law, that constitutes a red card, accidental or not. It’s a tough one, we’re all sitting here thinking it’s partially accidental, but by the letter of the law the referee has got that right”.

Josh Gardner, of the Blood & Mud podcast, commented: “I see the rugby union discourse this week will be mainly focused on when and how it should be acceptable to flying kick an opponent in the face. Remember everyone, player safety is paramount! Welfare!”

Chris Foy, of the Daily Mail, asked: “For everyone saying Jordie Barrett red card was harsh because it was an accident – what’s the need to raise his leg up to the horizontal after catching the ball?”

Former WalesOnline writer Delme Parfitt chipped in, saying: “Jordie Barrett is red all day long. Catching a high ball does not require a karate kick to maintain balance. If it does, then rugby will have to ban catching high balls.”

And South African scribe Dylan Jack said: “The one big thing this Jordie Barrett incident has shown is how World Rugby has failed in their duty to make the law clear and easy to understand.

“If former pros are disagreeing with each other, how do supporters come to an understanding?”

So lots of diverging opinions out there.

And that now is being used by some as evidence that the 20-minute red card law should be implemented globally.

That’s the view of both coaches from Saturday’s encounter – All Blacks boss Ian Foster and Wallabies chief Dave Rennie.

Foster didn’t believe Barrett should have received a red card in the first place, arguing he just lost balance.

But he said the new 20-minute law meant the consequences of the call weren’t too damaging.

Two years ago, the All Blacks were handed another red card in Perth when the third Barrett brother – lock Scott – was sent off just before half-time.

The 20-minute rule wasn’t in place back then and they ended up getting thumped 47-26 by the Wallabies.

But, on Saturday, it was a different story as they rode out their limited spell down to 14 men and won 38-21.

“It’s why all the SANZAAR countries are pretty united in wanting to carry on this global trial,” said Foster.

“We were a keen supporter of that even before the games. This event probably justifies it.”

The Wallabies’ Kiwi coach Rennie added: “I think it’s good we’ve got a 20-minute red card at the moment because it’s certainly not malicious.

“Based on law, when you field the ball and you kick your foot out and collect someone in the head, there’s going to be repercussions for that.

“I think the decision is probably accurate and the fact it was only 20 minutes is a good thing.”

But others disagree.

South African rugby writer Mark Barnard said: “The 20 minute red card is a stupid law.

“If you do something that warrants a red card, it should seriously cost your team.

“The effectiveness of the card as a punishment lies in the fact that you’ve let your team down. It is a poor law.”

And Irish journalist Mikey Stafford tweeted: “Rugby: We’re dead serious about player safety. Also rugby: Jordie Barrett kicks a guy in the face and gets red carded. Can be replaced after 20 minutes. Where is the deterrent?”

Finally, something of a balanced take from ESPN’s Sam Bruce, who gave the new law a thumbs up, but with a caveat.

“The mixed reaction to Barrett’s red card has at least made one thing abundantly clear – that having the trial red-card replacement law in place for the Rugby Championship was one of SANZAAR’s smarter moves in recent times, but that also a further delineation perhaps needs to be made if the trial is ever going to see the light of day globally, so that incidents of foul play such as punching, rucking, shoulder charges or swinging arm high tackles, where the intent is abundantly clear, can still be sanctioned by a send-off where the player cannot be replaced.”

So lots to mull over there.

As for the other new laws, well they are in place across the board in the world game.

Teams are finding their feet with them, but you are already starting to see them coming into play.

There was a classic example of how effective the 50:22 rule can be during the opening weekend of the French Top 14.

Playing against Toulouse, Montpellier employed it straight from a lineout on half-way, with a perfectly placed kick bouncing into touch near the corner flag to set up an attacking close-range lineout.

Toulouse didn’t have a player back covering the touchline and that vacant space was exploited to good effect, with inventiveness and skilled execution being rewarded.

As for the other law trials, I’ve yet to see anyone with a good word to say about the one that sees a goal-line drop out rather than 22 drop out when an attacking kick is grounded by the defenders behind their try-line.

The view there is it turns bad kicks into decent ones, with over-hit punts that dribble over the whitewash being rewarded.

We will become more used to the new laws over the coming weeks and months, with plenty of opinions to be expressed yet.

It remains to be seen which of them will become permanent and whether the much-debated 20 minute red card will eventually become a worldwide policy.
